Last year it was announced that "Mad Men" writer/producer Marti Noxon would be writing a remake to the classic 1985 horror comedy Fright Night. Spielberg's DreamWorks is developing and Michael De Luca is producing the remake. When Collider caught up with De Luca and talked with him about all the projects he's working on, he asked him briefly about Fright Night as well. And his answer to why they're remaking it is just brilliant. Or at least that's what I think. The original Fright Night is about a teenager who discovers his neighbors are vampires. De Luca compares the scope and size of the film to Disturbia. So why remake it?
"And with Fright Night, with all the romantic vampire stuff going on with The Vampire Diaries and True Blood and Twilight, the most obvious. We thought it would be interesting if, in this atmosphere of the way the vampire is being portrayed right now as a romantic object, under the wire of all that in the culture the real thing moves in next door. And the real thing is a killer. Just a predator. It’s the shark from Jaws. On the outside it’s a seductive package and it looks like a human being, but it’s just about ripping your throat out and drinking your blood. And introducing that kind of vampire into the current environment."
I love it! Normally when you ask producers or executives about remakes, they don't know why they're even remaking it, besides that it's a property audiences are already familiar with. But this time, De Luca actually has a reason for bringing back Fright Night, and best of all it's a damn good reason. He wants to throw a big fat wrench into the vampire genre right now with some bloody, crazy killers instead of the glittery kind. And I, for one, support him on this venture. But then again, Daybreakers kind of tried to do the same, and it didn't do too well at the box office. Hopefully this one, with its comedy-horror twist, will fare much better.Source: Firstshowing.net
