This is insane I tell you! Yesterday we reported that The Twilight Saga: New Moon broke the record the record for midnight box office sales which was previously held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Today I am shocked to report that it has achieved the best movie opening day of all time with an incredible $72.7 million bucks domestically!
This takes out the previous record holder, The Dark Knight, which took in $67.2 million its first day of release, and went on to make $158.4 million in opening weekend. It will be interesting to see how much New Moon makes when the weekend is all said and done. Will it beat out The Dark Knight? $72.7 million blows away the industries expectations, and just to put things in perspective, the first Twilight film made $69.6 million its first weekend last year.
As you know New Moon was heavily targeted to teenage girls, but these box office numbers reveal that more than just teenage girls turned out. I can only imagine that several girls dragged their boyfriends and husbands to the film, and the hardcore fans are probably seeing it more than once. But maybe, just maybe, guys are going to see them movie of their own free will and choice. Summit will release the demographic information tomorrow.
What does this mean for future Hollywood films!? Are we going to now see a crazy influx of fantasy love stories catered to teenager’s? Probably, yeah. Will it have the same effects as Twilight? Most likely not, but they will try it anyway.
What are your thoughts on the success of New Moon? Does it surprise you that it knocked out The Dark Knight in opening day earnings, and do you think it will take the spot of biggest opening weekend?
