Must watch trailer for the australian horror film The Loved Ones.

I'm a sucker for horror films, and this new Australian horror film from director Sean Byrne called The Loved Ones looks pretty damn good! I haven't seen it yet, but apparently the people that have seen it really enjoyed it. It debuted at a few film festivals last year and ended up winning the Midnight Madness program award at the Toronto Film Festival. Unfortunately there's no U.S. distributor for the film yet, hopefully it gets one because I would love to see this on the big screen. If just looks like a simple fun horror film with some solid acting, and a very creepy tone.
Synopsis:
Brent (Xavier Samuel) has never recovered from the night of the car crash that killed his father; the crash that he was responsible for. His only solace is his loving girlfriend Holly (Victoria Thaine). But there’s another girl who yearns to comfort Brent, the quietest girl in school LOLA (Robin McLeavy), and when he turns down her invitation to the prom he enters a nightmare beyond imagining. Hours before the dance, Brent is abducted and taken to Lola’s home by her demented Daddy (John Brumpton) who’s determined to make his princess' dream come true. Now imprisoned in Lola’s home Brent discovers that her feelings for him aren’t the only thing she’s been keeping a secret, and that he must summon every ounce of will he possesses if he is to survive and prevent Lola and her father from extending her revenge to those he loves most.

''The Loved Ones wisely makes the torture bearable by pandering a bit to the horror crowd. In this case, pandering is not a bad thing because it makes more of an absurd spectacle out of Lola’s brutality so that, while we are cringing, we are enjoying the ride. The genius of The Loved Ones is that it knows how to use over-the-top horror elements to provide the necessary safety net for the tightrope walk between shock and entertainment. The dynamic of Lola’s family also seems like a pretty obvious reference to The Texas Chainsaw Massacreso that should also be sure to please us horror geeks. The choice made by actress Robin McLeavy to play Lola with just as much childish glee as unsettling menace was superb. She’s evil incarnate but also a spoiled toddler in a teen-aged body. To us, she’s committing unspeakable atrocities but to her, it’s her birthday party and Brent is her new toy.''
