Sony and Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will now start developing He-Man for Columbia Pictures. Unfortunately this producing team has developed some pretty bad films in the past, like The Taking of Pelham 123, Knowing, and Seven Pounds. So it looks like this will be their first fantasy action film, and as much as I want to be excited about this movie getting made, now that I see who is involved my excitment is dwindling. Before the film was described as being as epic as Lord of the Rings. If they are starting from scratch then I guess that’s not going to happen.
John Stevenson was previously attached to direct the film, but if they are starting from scratch he may not be involved any longer. Justin Marks and Evan Daugherty both wrote great versions of the script for Warner Bros. The WB will retain the rights to those scripts, so Sony is going to have to find a new writer.
I wish this would have worked out at Warner Bros. Everything seemed so promising. We were going to get a hardcore epic He-Man movie! Now who knows what we are going to get from a team of producers that have mostly produced crap. The only movie I liked that they did was The Pursuit of Happiness.
